Eggs: Lay medium to large brown eggs
Size: Hens weigh 5–6 lbs at maturity
Temperament: Docile and easy to work with
Hardiness: Can handle heat and cold well
Developed in the 1950s by crossing a New Hampshire Red male with a Barred Plymouth Rock female 
Most Black Stars have a life expectancy of 4–5 years
